Much has been made lately of Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg’s book and organization, Lean In. Are their recommendations right for every woman in the working world? How should young adult females take this information and apply it to their own situations and future aspirations? Why are women being told to lean in and not stand up? In the conversation, many may have missed a very important point made on the organization’s website.

Multimedia mogul Tyra Banks attributes her leaning abilities and “Top Model” persona to one person, “the world’s most helpful librarian.”

Stop by your local library and ask a librarian to help you chart you future. It worked for Tyra – Leaning, Standing and Catwalking!

http://leanin.org/stories/tyra-banks/

In addition to being the founder and owner of the multimedia company, Bankable Productions, a former Supermodel and the orginator of the television franchise, America’s Next Top Model, Ms. Banks is the author of the YA novel, Modelland.

TRW’12 Kickoff & Logo and Slogan Awards Reception

Sunday, October 14, 2012; 3:00 to 5:00pm

All Ages

This event is also our kickoff celebration for Teen Read Week 2012. Join us as the winners of the YA@AL Logo and Slogan Contests are revealed. Prizes will be awarded and refreshments served.

School’s Out In The Library

Thursday, October 18, 2012; Noon to 4:30pm

Ages 11-17

Today is an early dismissal day in Richmond County Schools. While school is out, young adults will be in the library. We’ll have a brief discussion about the history of American comic books and then we’ll watch one of the latest screen adaptations, The Avengers.

Zombie Sock Hop

Friday, October 19, 2012; 5:30 to 7:30pm

Ages 11-17

It Came From Outer Space is the campy movie we’ll be showing this evening in celebration of TRW’12 and its theme – It Came From The Library: Dare to read…for the fun of it. In between laughing at the “special effects” in this black and white movie from the 1950’s, there will be trivia and dance contests that promise fun for everyone.

TRW’12 Book Swap & AE Session

Friday, October 19, 2012; 5:30 to 7:30pm

Ages 11-17

We’ll be participating via the internet with YA@AL at the Diamond Lakes Branch in the final TRW’12 event. Bring personal copies of books to trade and your endings to some of your favorite teen-young adult books. You can write them beforehand, rap them or just talk to the crowd off the top of your head about, say, how you will always be Team Jacob and why Bella should have dumped Edward two books ago. Fun, creative and often insightful, you’ll have a great time exploring some intriguing alternatives to books you thought were over and done – until now.

- Other October Events -

Ghost Story Writing Contest Submission Period

Monday, October 1 – Friday, October 19, 2012

Ages 11-17

The library is accepting submissions from young authors ages 11 to 17 years old for the annual Ghost Story Writing Contest. Guidelines for stories and submissions will be posted on Monday, October 1 on the Teen Blog and at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/JWMDR7N. All submissions must be entered by close of business on Friday, October 19. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 finalists at a reception on October 27, 2012. So, get you’re your quills and chills ready because, as YA@AL always says, you can’t win if you don’t play!

Study Hall

Wednesdays, October 10, 17, 24 & 31, 2012; 3:00 to 5:00pm

Ages 11-17

Wednesdays Study Hall is held in the YA Room on the 2nd Floor. Come get assistance from the library staff with papers and projects. Print material as well as online services like Galileo can provide sources that give a much more comprehensive view of your assigned subject. Study Hall will show how to use these sources to your best advantage.

Monthly After Hours Scavenger Hunt

Friday, October 26, 2012; 5:30 to 7:30pm in the YA Room

Ages 11-17

We’ll have the whole place to ourselves again. Win prizes by finding hidden objects in the library using a clue sheet. Since school’s back in full swing and schedules have us all harried and hurried, this month’s theme is “Positive Attitude Month & World Kindness Week.” Join us for a snack supper as we have a great…greater…THE greatest time. All participants must be in the building before we close at 5:30pm.

Ghost Story Awards Program & Reception

Saturday, October 27, 2012; 3:00pm

All Ages

The winners of the Ghost Story Writing Contest will be announced, awards will be presented and refreshments will be served. Bring friends and family.

Get Understanding Youth Speakers Series

Sunday, October 28, 2012; 3:00pm

Ages 11-17

The Get Understanding Youth Speakers Series is a monthly event at the Headquarters location that features issues and/or persons of interest to patrons aged 11 to 17 years old. Speakers discuss hobbies, college/vocational planning or present community resources in a relatable way to and for teens. For this month’s topic information, consult the library’s Teen Blog in October at http://teens.ecgrl.org.

Our Home School Open House generated some interesting dialogue among attendees in relation to the presentation, The Library for the College-Bound Student. Home-schooled young people got to meet each other and have some stimulating conversation, while parents in attendance asked questions regarding the library’s resources and services that can support their individualized curriculums. Another session is being planned for November if you missed this one, so keep checking back for dates and times.

An enthusiatic group of college prep students at Curtis Baptist School also benefitted from the presentation which was delivered in class on Wednesday, September 5, 2012. We look forward to greeting their members as they journey to the library for a follow-up visit intended to further reinforce the topics covered at their session.

The general public is encouraged to come hear the same presentation, The Library for the College-Bound Student, on Sunday, September 30, 2012 at 3:00pm at the September installment of the Get Understanding Speakers Series. This informational series held one Sunday afternoon each month at the Headquarters location features issues and/or persons of interest to patrons aged 11 to 17 years old. Speakers discuss hobbies, college/vocational planning or present on community resources in a relatable way to and for teens. Upcoming sessions include healthy cooking and eating for teens and a discussion of the December holidays celebrated by various faiths represented in the CSRA. While the topics are geared toward teens, it’s actually a great way for the whole family to spend an enjoyable and educational afternoon together at the library.

Congratulations to Caleb, Fredreca & Joshua, our 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place August Scavenger Hunt winners! This month’s topic was Back to School. As they excitedly searched throughout the closed library to find the answers to clues that helped complete their bingo cards, High School Musical 3 provided the ultimate soundtrack for fun. Who knew that Warren Buffet, the 3rd richest man in the world, graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln? Our hunters know now as most found the answer to this clue during their chase. Everyone got prizes and food was enjoyed by all, so make sure you put September’s hunt on your calendar. Friday, September 28th at 5:30pm is THE day and time you want to get stuck in the library. Remember-you can’t win if you don’t play!

Keep checking back for periodic updates on what’s happening for ya’ll with YA@AL. And that’s what’s up…
